What is Human Resources management?

Human resource management is the process of hiring, recruiting and managing employees in an organization.

Human Resource Management is the process of acquiring, possessing, eliminating, improving and properly utilizing human resources in an organization.

HRM is a strategic way of efficient management of the workforce in an organization so that they can help the business to achieve a competitive advantage.

Overall, Human resource management is the practice of recruiting, hiring, deploying and managing an organization’s employees.  It is the process of recruiting, selecting, providing orientation, giving training and development of employees, appraising employee’s performance, providing compensation and benefits, motivating employees, maintaining relations with employees and their trade unions, ensuring employees safety, welfare and healthy measures in compliance with labor laws of the land.


History of HRM

Human resources are used to describe both the people who work for a company or organization and the department responsible for managing resources related to employees. The term human resources were first coined in the 1960s when the value of labor relations began to garner attention and when notions such as motivation, organizational behavior, and selection assessments began to take shape.

When the industrial revolution began around the world in the early twentieth century, the organization has started using workers illegally to survive in competition. They did not pay properly and most of the time the workers did not get their fair wages. As a result, workers become dissatisfied. Originally, the concept of human resource management was born out of this labor dissatisfaction. However, in recent times, the scope of human resource management has expanded considerably. Human resource management is different from traditional personal management.

Scientific theory to HRM

HRM began largely from the scientific management theory of Frederick Taylor. Scientific management brought the efficiency, effectiveness, and frugality of the production process. It needed a more advanced theory to make this scientific management known as human relations science. Later, human relations science took the form of human resource management.

In his study of the human relations sciences, Elton Mayo came in the middle of the twentieth century to show how increasing workers’ wages accelerate the production system and motivate workers to produce more.

Responsibility of HRM department

Human resource management is a strategy that focuses on the well-managed system of internal human resources to achieve the goals of an organization. Attracting employees to the organization, finding and recruiting qualified persons from among the interested ones, motivating the employees and maintaining good relations with them, paving the way for continuous improvement in their career and trimming them if necessary all includes in the HRM department.

Why HRM is important?

Demand is unlimited but resources are limited. Therefore, with these limited resources organizations need to meet the demand. To do this, the proper utilization of limited resources is the most important. HRM helps the company properly utilize its scarce resources and gain competitive advantages in the present competitive corporate world.

Once corporate people believed that a good business plan is a key point for organization success but today’s perception is that you cannot succeed without proper management of your scarce resources.  A business can fail because of poor resources management even they have a proper plan, high investment, and better quality.


Among the five Ms of management,( men, money, machines, materials, and methods) HRM deals with the men. In the five Ms, “men” is not so easy to manage. It is important because it is important to choose the right people for the right job at the right time. Besides, the HR department not only conducts the selection process but also appraises the performance of the employees. It monitors the task of the employee. If there, any problem occurs with the performance of the employee HR department take necessary actions, i.e training, and development program.

What is the purpose of Human resource management?

The purpose of Human resource management is to select the right person for the right job. Choosing the right person for the job is going on a structural process. To identify the right person for a particular job, the employer needs to offer the job which contains job description means duties and responsibilities and job specifications ( academic qualifications and other qualifications related to the job).

To pick up correct candidates, the employee should be tested by suitable selection methods. Subsequently selected candidates should be provided the proper training for performing his duties & responsibilities mentioned in the job.

After that, it should be evaluated the performance of the employee to identify whether the employees’ performance matches the desired standards of the organization or not. Accordingly, employees should be rewarded for positive improvement and motivated for poor performance or providing training for improvements. Also, it is the manager’s responsibility to ensure employees’ safety in the job. Healthy and welfare measures are important to keep employees happy and motivated. It has a positive impact on productivity.

Positive HR practice is important for maintaining proper and healthy relationships between employees and management that avoid conflicts among them which will affect the overall performance of the organization.
